This Week:
This week, we will be focusing on the story of Joshua and Caleb. We will determine the importance of trusting God with heart, soul, mind, and strength. Students will also analyze characteristics of key people in the account of the Battle of Jericho.
Reading groups continue to be one of our favorite times of the day! We will continue to focus on reading comprehension in our Jack and Jilly readers. We will also be exploring different ways to practice our spelling words. In Writer's Workshop, we will be working on the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Students will practice writing a story that includes all three parts. We will also continue using descriptive words and details to "spice" up our sentences!
In Math, we will continue to work on speed and accuracy with our doubles facts. We will also begin practicing addition facts plus one. (2+1, 3+1...) Students will be introduced to the Saxon Learning Wrap-Ups to help connect the problems with the answers. In Science, we will be discussing what to do to recover from a disaster as a community. I have also decided to spend a little more time on exploring weather and the tools meteorologists use.
Homework:
Students seem to be enjoying learning their spelling words using a variety of ways. There will be a spelling test on Friday, October 7th. Students will also be assessed on their memory verse this Friday. The math homework for this week will be 2 pages each day. Please be sure and check your child's red folder for our weekly homework sheet. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! :-)

This Week: This week, we will be focusing on the story of Moses. We will discuss how God used Moses to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land. Students will also order the events leading up to the Exodus and discuss the ten plagues.
Reading groups continue to help students become fluent in their Jack and Jilly readers! This week, we will practice our spelling words using a variety of manipulatives. Students will also be introduced to new literacy activities that they will work on independently. In Writer's Workshop, I am excited to begin a fun unit on adjectives and similes. Students will use several graphic organizers to describe their experience eating Pop Rocks candy in class!
In Math, we will be working on doubles fats with sums to 18. Students will also practice place value using unifix cubes. In Science, we will continue exploring the wonderful world of Weather! Students will determine the three types of clouds and graph their favorite. We will also take a closer look at hurricanes and the importance of disaster safety.
Homework: I hope your child is enjoying all the fun spelling activities used to learn spelling words! They love to tell me all the different ways they practice at home! There will be a spelling test on Friday, September 23rd.Students will also be assessed on their memory verse this Friday. Please be sure and check your child's red folder for our weekly homework sheet. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! :-)

This Week:
This week, we will be focusing on the story of Joseph and his amazing dream. We will also compare and contrast traits of the Bible characters previously taught.
Reading groups continue to be a huge success! I am so proud of the progress I am seeing in the Jack and Jilly Readers. This week, we will begin listening and computer activities within our reading block. Students will practice retelling a story and identifying the main parts. They will also be using white boards to practice spelling words and write the room! In Writer's Workshop, students will continue using first grade writing rubrics to proofread their work. They will also work on staying on topic and using descriptive words in their writing.
In Math, we will be working on ordinal positions and constructing some/some more addition problems. In Science, we will continue exploring the weather! Students will determine the different types of clouds and graph their favorite. We will also take a closer look at hurricanes and the importance of disaster safety.
Homework:
There will be a spelling test on Friday. Use this week to practice the the new words using a variety of activities. Students will be assessed on their memory verse this Friday. This Week:
I hope that everyone had a wonderful "extra" day off! I am excited to get back into the swing of things! This week, we will be focusing on the story of Jacob and Esau. In Spelling, we will be doing several fun activities with the different word families. Due to the shortened school week, there will be no spelling test on Friday. We will use this time to review our past two lists and prepare for next week!
Reading groups are becoming a favorite part of the day for students! They are growing as both readers and writers and I am so proud of the progress they have made already!! The students especially love our "Write the Room" activities using their clipboards. In Writer's Workshop, we will learn what to do when writing a word we don't know. Students will also be introduced to a first grade writing rubric. This rubric will serve as a tool to help students proofread their work!
In Math, we will work on dividing an object into equal parts. We will also be working on some/some more and some/some went away word problems. In Science, we will continue exploring the wonderful world of Weather! Students will have fun making a diagram of the water cycle!
Homework:
I am so proud of the time and dedication students are putting into their homework!
There will be no spelling test this week! Use this time to review the past two weeks of spelling lists. Students will be assessed on their memory verse this Friday. Please be sure and check your child's red folder for our weekly homework sheet. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! :-)

This Week:
I am excited to announce that the students will have their first Music class this week! They are enjoying all of their Specials, especially Computer Lab! This week we will be focusing on the story of Noah and his obedience to God. In Spelling, we will continue to review letter sounds and blends, while practicing for our first Spelling Test on Friday! Be sure and check your child's red homework folder for our weekly spelling words.
The students continue to impress me with their behavior and work ethic during our Reading Groups! They are reading from both their book boxes and Jack and Jilly Readers! Writer's Workshop is also a fun time for students. We are learning to write about one topic and use details in our supporting sentences. Be sure and ask your child about the Squiggle Story they will write this week! :-)
In Math, we will be focusing on pictographs and solving word problems. We will also begin daily practice of our doubles addition facts! In Science, we will continue exploring the world of magnets! We had a great time last week testing different magnets in small groups. This week, we will learn how magnets help us both in work and play. We will also practice using magnets through different materials such as paper, foil, plastic, and even water!
Homework:
Be sure and check your child's red folder in the F.I.S.H. Binder for our weekly homework sheet. I have also included our first list of spelling words that will be on the spelling test on Friday. Attached to the list I have included a variety of ways your child can practice the words at home this week. Students will be assessed on their Memory Verse this Friday as well. If you should have any questions regarding our homework, please feel free to contact me. :-)

Classroom Happenings-Volume 1
Welcome to our First Grade Blog! I will update the blog weekly with our newsletter and other fun things things going on in our classroom! I am so excited to get this blog rolling!! :-)

The First Week:
What a wonderful first week of school we had! We learned about our new classroom and spent some time getting to know each other!! The students had fun using their clipboards to survey their friends on likes and dislikes. We began writing in our Journals and using our Spelling and Bible workbooks. Students reviewed the Days of Creation and the story of Adam and Eve. In Math, we practiced building towers using unifix cubes and exploring our first grade meeting board!
This Week:
We will begin diving into our curriculum! Students will get back into their Jack and Jilly Readers and begin Reading Group rotations. The first few weeks of our Spelling curriculum will consist of reviewing letter sounds and blends. There will be no spelling test this week. We will also be learning about the Bible story Cain and Abel. In Science, we will be studying the properties of magnets. Students will work in groups to test the magnetism of different objects.
Homework:
Please be sure and check the red folder in the F.I.S.H. Binder for our weekly homework. All homework (including daily Math sheets) will be due on Friday. Students will be assessed on their memory verse on Friday as well.
